Tesla Holds Bitcoin Position Steady as Digital Asset Loss Reaches $112M

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: $TSLA) kept its Bitcoin treasury unchanged at 11,509 BTC in the second quarter, extending a holding pattern that has now lasted nearly four years.

The electric vehicle maker recorded a $112 million after-tax loss on its digital asset holdings as Bitcoin fell about 14% during the quarter. The cryptocurrency declined from roughly $83,000 at the end of March to around $58,000 by June 30 before recovering above $65,000 in July.

Tesla has not bought or sold any Bitcoin since 2022. The company entered the market with a $1.5 billion purchase in early 2021 and briefly accepted the cryptocurrency as payment for its vehicles. It later suspended the option over environmental concerns and sold about 75% of its position the following year.

More From Cryptoprowl:

The remaining 11,509 BTC has stayed on the balance sheet since then, leaving Tesla among the larger public companies holding Bitcoin directly. Its position is still well below Strategy, which has continued using equity and debt markets to expand its treasury.

Tesla’s crypto loss landed alongside a mixed second-quarter earnings report. Revenue came in at $28.2 billion, above the $27.6 billion expected by analysts, while adjusted earnings of $0.33 per share missed the $0.55 consensus estimate.

GAAP net income totalled $1.11 billion and gross margin reached 16.8%. The company also reported negative free cash flow of $1.1 billion as spending increased across artificial intelligence, robotics and manufacturing.

Bitcoin no longer sits at the center of Tesla’s capital strategy, but the quarter showed that the position can still move through earnings even without a transaction. The company has avoided adding to the reserve through both rallies and declines, turning what began as a high-profile treasury allocation into a largely passive balance-sheet holding.

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is currently trading at $374.01 U.S. per share, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) is currently trading at $65,922 U.S. per digital token.
