Gold Broke the Downtrend Line, But 4200 Still Limits the Upside

Gold Broke the Downtrend Line, But 4200 Still Limits the Upside

Gold recently delivered an important technical signal, with XAUUSD breaking above the descending trendline that had been controlling the market during the previous correction.

From the 1H structure, gold found support around the 3960-4000 area and started a strong rebound. The short-term structure has improved:

The previous downtrend line has been broken;
Price has recovered above key short-term levels;
Market momentum has shifted from bearish pressure toward a more neutral-to-bullish phase.

However, this breakout alone is not enough to confirm a new bullish trend.

The reason is simple:

XAUUSD is still trading inside the broader 4000-4200 range.

After recovering toward the 4150-4160 area, gold has started to face selling pressure again. The 4200 level remains the key resistance that bulls must overcome.

4200 Remains the Decisive Level

The 4200 area is not only a psychological barrier but also a major supply zone where sellers have previously stepped in.

If gold can break above 4200 with strong momentum and hold above this level on higher timeframes, the market structure could shift further bullish.

The next potential targets would be:

4250 → 4300

However, if gold continues to fail near 4200, the current move should still be considered:

a rebound within a larger range, rather than a confirmed trend reversal.

Rate Hike Concerns Continue to Pressure Gold

Although safe-haven demand remains supportive, gold is still facing pressure from interest rate expectations.

Market concerns about inflation and the Federal Reserve’s policy direction have kept the ā€œhigher-for-longer ratesā€ narrative alive.

For gold, the following factors remain negative:

Stronger US dollar;
Higher Treasury yields;
Reduced expectations for aggressive rate cuts.

This creates the current market conflict:

Safe-haven demand supports gold, while higher rate expectations limit the upside.

Key Technical Levels

Resistance:

4150-4200

A breakout above 4200 could open the way toward the next bullish targets.

Support:

4070-4080

This is the key retest area after the trendline breakout.

If this support fails, gold could return to test:

4000

A break below 4000 would weaken the current recovery structure and suggest that the trendline breakout was only a false signal.

Trading Perspective

At the current level, chasing longs near 4150-4200 carries higher risk.

A better approach:

Wait for a pullback toward 4070-4080 and look for confirmation;
Or wait for a confirmed breakout above 4200 before following the trend.

For bears, the 4200 area remains an important zone to watch. A rejection from this level could create another short-term correction.

Conclusion

Gold has successfully broken above the short-term descending trendline, showing that bearish momentum is weakening.

However, before breaking above 4200, XAUUSD remains trapped inside the 4000-4200 consolidation range.

The next major move depends on one key question:

Can gold overcome the 4200 resistance, or will renewed rate hike concerns continue to limit further upside?

For now, gold remains short-term bullish but still needs a decisive breakout above 4200 to confirm a larger trend reversal.
