Good Afternoon,
Hope all is well. Here is my TA on PNR.
What Iām Seeing
Looking at Pentair on the weekly chart, Iām still dealing with a clearly bearish structure. Price has fallen from roughly $110 to $53, weāre below a declining weekly trend/average, and I still have a sequence of lower highs and lower lows.
So Iām not calling a bottom here.
What is getting my attention is how price is beginning to respond to heavy selling volume as we move deeper into the decline.
Iāve marked several high-volume nodes around the $58ā$65 area. Despite that heavy participation, price hasnāt accelerated lower in the same way it did earlier in the selloff.
At the same time, my longer-term volume trendline is beginning to top out and move lower, while my negative directional indicator has moved below the average directional index.
To me, that suggests:
the trend is still bearish, but the intensity of the bearish pressure may be starting to weaken.
The High-Volume Nodes Are What Iām Watching
This is probably the most important part of the chart for me.
As Pentair dropped through the $70s and into the $60s, I started seeing several heavy-volume events.
Normally, if sellers remain firmly in control, I would expect that type of volume to produce increasingly aggressive downside movement.
Instead, Iām beginning to see a lot of selling effort without the same amount of downside result.
Price has continued lower, so I can’t call this absorption yet.
But the rate of decline appears to be slowing relative to the amount of activity coming into the stock.
That’s where I start paying attention.
If another large selling event comes into Pentair around these levels and price barely moves lower, my seller-exhaustion thesis becomes considerably stronger.
My Volume Trendline Is Starting to Roll Over
The longer-term volume trendline is also important to me.
It increased substantially as Pentair transitioned from the highs into the current markdown.
Now it appears to be topping out and beginning to turn lower.
That potentially tells me that participation in the decline is no longer accelerating.
Again, that doesn’t automatically mean buyers have taken control.
What it tells me is that the selling side may be becoming less aggressive.
That’s usually the first thing I want to see before I start looking for a bottom.
Bearish Directional Pressure Is Weakening
I’m also seeing my negative directional movement indicator break beneath the average directional index.
The way I interpret that is not:
“Pentair is bullish now.”
I’m reading it more as:
“The bearish directional pressure that drove the decline may be losing strength.”
That’s an important distinction.
A trend can stop getting worse long before it actually reverses.
So right now I’m watching for the transition from:
strong bearish trend ā weakening bearish trend ā consolidation ā accumulation ā potential reversal.
I think I may be somewhere between the first two stages.
$50ā$55 Is the Area Iām Watching
At roughly $53, Pentair is approaching an area where I’m particularly interested in seeing how sellers behave.
I would treat roughly $50ā$55 as my observation zone, not automatically as a buy zone.
What I want is for price to stop making easy lower lows.
If sellers attack $50ā$55 with heavy volume and price simply refuses to move substantially lower, that’s useful information.
Then I want to see volatility compress and price start spending time around these levels.
That’s how the accumulation thesis would begin developing for me.
I Still Need a Base
This is probably the biggest difference between Pentair and some of the other bottoming structures I’ve been looking at.
I don’t have a proper base yet.
Price is still falling.
So even though I’m seeing possible exhaustion signals, I don’t want to get ahead of the chart.
Ideally, I’d like to see something like:
$50ā$55 holds ā sideways consolidation ā failed breakdown ā higher low ā breakout.
Until I get that, this remains a bearish stock showing early signs that selling pressure may be weakening.
$58ā$60 Is My First Reclaim
My first technical improvement would be a reclaim of roughly $58ā$60.
That’s where some of the recent high-volume activity occurred.
If price gets back above that area, it tells me the shares exchanged during those high-volume weeks are beginning to be repriced upward.
Then I’d be watching approximately $64ā$66.
That’s where I’d start seeing more meaningful structural improvement.
My ideal sequence would be:
$50ā$55 base ā $60 reclaim ā higher low ā $65 breakout.
That’s when I’d become considerably more interested in a genuine recovery.
$70ā$80 Is the Bigger Trend Test
Even if Pentair bottoms here, there’s still substantial technical damage above us.
Approximately $70ā$75 looks like an important previous breakdown area.
And then I have the declining weekly trend/average moving toward roughly the upper-$70s/low-$80s.
So my larger recovery roadmap would be:
$50ā$55 ā $60 ā $65 ā $70ā$75 ā $78ā$82 weekly trend.
If Pentair eventually reclaims that weekly trend and then establishes a higher low above it, that’s when I would start thinking about a much larger reversal.
For now, I’m focused on whether $50ā$55 can actually become a floor.
Fundamentals ā The Selloff Has a Real Explanation
This is where the chart makes more sense.
Pentair’s Q2 2026 sales fell 17% year over year to $933 million, while adjusted EPS declined 18% to $1.14. The biggest problem was its Pool business, where channel inventory destocking reduced quarterly sales by roughly $170 million. Pentair plc
That was a major change from the beginning of the year.
Back in Q1, Pentair had reported 3% sales growth and 10% adjusted EPS growth, and management was expecting full-year adjusted EPS of roughly $5.30ā$5.40. Pentair plc
Then the Pool inventory problem emerged much more aggressively than expected.
So fundamentally, I can understand why the market repriced the stock.
Guidance Was Cut Significantly
This is probably the biggest fundamental reason I’m not rushing to call the bottom.
Management now expects 2026 sales to decline roughly 4%ā7%, compared with its earlier expectation for 2%ā4% growth.
Adjusted EPS guidance was reduced to approximately $4.60ā$4.80, versus the previous $5.30ā$5.40 range. Pentair plc
That’s a meaningful reset.
Management estimates Pool-channel destocking will reduce full-year sales by approximately $250 million and segment income by roughly $155 million. Pentair plc
So the stock isn’t falling for no reason.
The market is digesting a legitimate earnings and inventory correction.
The Important Question: Temporary Reset or Structural Problem?
This is where my fundamental thesis really comes down to one question.
Is the Pool weakness temporary channel destocking, or is it signaling a deeper deterioration in end demand?
Management’s position is that the inventory correction is temporary and that right-sizing the channel in 2026 should position Pool for improved performance in 2027. Flow and Water Solutions were expected to remain roughly consistent with previous guidance. Pentair plc
I don’t automatically take management’s interpretation as fact.
I want the next several quarters to confirm it.
If channel inventories normalize and orders begin improving, then today’s earnings deterioration could prove cyclical.
If weakness persists after inventories have supposedly normalized, I’d have to consider whether there’s a deeper demand problem.
The Taco Acquisition Adds Another Layer
There’s also a major strategic change happening.
Pentair announced a $1.4 billion acquisition of Taco Group, a water and hydronic systems business with exposure to areas including HVAC and infrastructure. Reuters reported the transaction alongside the Q2 results, and Pentair’s investor-relations site says the acquisition was completed on October 1. Reuters
That potentially gives Pentair greater exposure outside the Pool business.
Strategically, that could help diversify the company.
But it also introduces integration and capital-allocation risk at a time when the existing business is already going through a reset.
So I’ll want to see whether Taco improves growth without putting excessive pressure on the balance sheet or margins.
Why This Setup Interests Me
This is where the technical and fundamental pictures start lining up.
Fundamentally, Pentair has just gone through a major expectations reset:
Pool destocking ā sales decline ā earnings decline ā guidance cut ā investor repricing.
Technically, I’m beginning to see:
heavy selling ā additional heavy selling ā less downside progress ā volume trend topping ā bearish directional pressure weakening.
That combination gets my attention.
I’m not trying to determine whether Pentair’s business is perfect.
I’m trying to determine whether the market has already priced in a significant amount of the bad news.
Price behavior around $50ā$55 should help answer that.
My Bullish Scenario
What I want to see from here is:
$50ā$55 holds ā selling pressure continues weakening ā consolidation develops ā $58ā$60 reclaimed ā higher low ā $64ā$66 breakout.
If that happens, I think $70ā$75 becomes the next meaningful recovery area.
And if Pentair eventually gets through the declining weekly trend around the upper-$70s/low-$80s, I’d have much stronger evidence that I’m dealing with an actual trend reversal.
I don’t need to catch the exact bottom.
I want the market to prove that the bottom exists.
My Bearish Scenario
If Pentair continues straight through $50 with expanding volume and renewed downside momentum, then I’m not going to force an accumulation thesis onto the chart.
That would tell me sellers still have control.
Fundamentally, I’d also become more cautious if the Pool inventory correction lasts longer than management expects, 2027 demand remains weak, or guidance is reduced again.
In that situation, I’d rather wait for price to establish a lower base before reassessing.
My Bias
Right now, I’m interested in Pentair, but I think I’m early.
The biggest thing catching my attention is that I’m starting to see heavy selling volume produce progressively less downside, while my volume trendline and directional indicators are beginning to show signs that bearish pressure may be weakening.
But unlike a confirmed accumulation setup, I still don’t have the base.
So for me:
$50ā$55 = my observation / potential bottoming zone.
$58ā$60 = first reclaim.
$64ā$66 = stronger confirmation.
$70ā$75 = major recovery test.
$78ā$82 = larger weekly trend-reversal area.
What I’m watching now is very simple:
If sellers continue hitting Pentair with heavy volume and price stops making meaningful new lows, I’m going to become increasingly interested.
If that eventually turns into sideways consolidation, a higher low and a reclaim of $60ā$65, then I’ll have much stronger evidence that the market has absorbed the selling and a genuine accumulation phase may be developing.
Trade Safely
Enjoy!
