Bechtel assumes management for Polish nuclear power plant

Bechtel has taken over management of the site designated for Poland’s first nuclear power plant, as the project shifts from design and planning to large-scale site preparation and construction.

The transition from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) to the US-based engineering company coincides with the start of earthworks at the Choczewo site, marking a key development in Poland’s long-term energy strategy.

Bechtel will now oversee construction operations, coordinate contractors, supervise activity on site and ensure safety standards throughout the project.

According to the company, more than 400 people are currently involved in the initial site works, with about one-third of the workforce recruited locally in Poland. This number is expected to increase as preparations progress.

Bechtel project director Ed Gore said: “As we assume responsibility for the site and begin the first permanent plant work, with the initial earthworks contract, we are focused on safely advancing the project, working closely with our Polish partners, and creating the platform for the next phase of work that will ultimately deliver a new source of reliable, carbon-free energy for Poland.”

The commencement of earthworks marks the beginning of physical construction at the location.

Work on the 300ha site will include grading, levelling and the installation of improved drainage systems.

The project also includes the construction of around 16km of temporary access roads to support further work, as well as preparing areas for site offices, logistical infrastructure, warehouses and equipment maintenance facilities.

Polish construction firm Budimex has been selected to undertake the site preparation works, expanding opportunities for local firms.

Bechtel states it has signed contracts with several Polish suppliers, including Unihouse and DORACO, and is engaged in ongoing procurement with domestic businesses.

The workforce supporting the project will also operate from a newly established Bechtel office in Gdansk, expected to employ around 200 people, most of whom will be locally hired.

The facility brings together Bechtel’s global nuclear expertise with local Polish talent for the planned AP1000 nuclear power station.

The initiative aims to support Poland’s ambitions to establish a secure and reliable energy system, while also generating long-term economic opportunities for the region.

“Bechtel assumes management for Polish nuclear power plant” was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
